Unexpected journeyer. Last night when Pete (the ranch manager) was returning from town (Frazier Park) he saw a lone bicyclist setting up “camp” in the dark down by the road to the north of the entrance to the ranch.
You can’t see the Weekend Farmgirl ranch from the road so our unexpected journeyer certainly would not have known that he might have visitors. Pete stopped by to check in to let him know that our night time temps have been getting into the low teens. The journeyer seemed to be unconcerned with that fact and said he was all set with his air mattress, down sleeping bag and was heating up water for a water bottle to keep his feet warm. [Yikes! I’m cold at night in my heated bunkhouse and this guy didn’t even have a tent!]
This morning Pete decided to drive down the driveway before sunrise to make sure our journeyer had weathered the night and to bring him some freshly brewed hot coffee in a thermal mug and a warm fresh-from-the-pan hand-crafted ham and cheese bagel, with the request that our journeyer just leave the coffee mug by the side of the road when he packed up and left. [I’m sure the guy was quite surprised by his early morning visitor.]
Thank you just doesn’t cut it… WOW! The sun is still behind the hills and ALREADY you made my day! This is the happiest breakfast and coffee I’ve ever had. Been craving coffee and dairy the past 48 hours, you’ve satiated both at once. (I like the heavy dose of cheese. My style.) [I hope you can read this writing w/cold fingers and gloves on is not easy.] What did you put in this coffee and sandwich? I feel SUPER HUMAN! Q: Does your neighbor to the W.W.N. have pet lions? Sure sounds like it. Cycling from Skagit County, WA to South America.”
I say that life unscripted is magnificent. What are the chances that Pete and our journeyer’s paths would cross at just the right time and we would have the opportunity to bring a little bit of sunshine and warmth to his freezing morning (yes, the temp was 18 degrees before sunrise with a windchill down to 7). With his note, we learned his name is Reid and now we get to track his journey from Washington State to South America! [Pete never identified himself or the ranch so our journeyer does not know who brought him SUPER HUMAN powers this morning.]
I chuckle with his comment about the lions because I’m sure that waking to roaring lions came as a real surprise to him! Our neighbor down the road is Steve Martin’s Working Wildlife Ranch and yes, when those lions are hungry or mating, they’re really noisy!
I think that Pete summed it up for me perfectly when he said “I’m not as cosmic as you, but this ranch is something special.” I agreed with him and said ” Just wait, there’s a lot more of these cosmic moments coming.”
Happy New Year! 2015 could not have ended for me on a more uplifting note! I can hear God whispering in my ear “Go for it!”
Wishing everyone a blessed 2016 and may you find unexpected journeyers on your path.
