I have so much to learn.
I’ve been dreaming about a fruit orchard at the Weekend Farmgirl ranch for several months now. Just when I thought I’d seen the last snowfall, another dusting would arrive. I knew I needed to get busy ordering some bare root fruits and nuts before the organic supplier ran out. They arrived last week.
As I was unpacking, ranch manager extraordinaire Pete asked me if they were self-pollinating. Ummmm. I don’t know. Did I mention I have a lot to learn?
Thanks to Pete’s quick on-line research, he uncovered that we needed a pollinating plum and an apple. While running local errands yesterday, we stopped by the Cottage Garden Nursery in Frazier Park and hit the jackpot. The owner, Jean, helped us pick out some beautiful flowering specimens that will be the perfect addition to the orchard. Our new trees include almonds, apples, plum, cherry and peach.
The Kubota and an auger are a lifesaver (and backsaver) at the Weekend Farmgirl ranch so the hole digging was a cinch! Until Pete can get our automatic drip system installed, he rigged up a water barrel on the Ranger.
My hope is that these pretty little treasures will survive the wildlife and the temperatures here in Lockwood Valley so that generations to come will enjoy the fruits of my hard work this weekend!
